Migration in Response to Civil Conflict: Evidence from the Border of the American Civil War

چکیده
This paper documents a migration response to the American Civil War. We compare men who served in the Confederate Army with their men who served in the Union army in the border state of Kentucky, which contributed significant numbers of soldiers to both armies. To create the dataset, we collected the universe of existing Union and Confederate enlistees from Kentucky and matched men to their preand post-war occupations and place of residence using the 1860 and 1880 censuses. Our findings show that Confederate soldiers were positively selected from the Kentucky population prior to the onset of the conflict. We demonstrate strikingly di↵erent postwar migration patterns between Union and Confederate veterans, and we argue that this is driven by geographic di↵erences in the social returns to having served on each side. Our results suggest that the decision to serve on the Union or Confederate side created lasting social divisions between otherwise similar men, and that these divisions had real economic consequences.

Civil War: Spatiality, Contagion, and Diffusion
The spatial diffusion of violent conflict has been a major concern in recent literature on war. Specifically, students of international conflict have come to devote increasing attention to civil war and how various other forms of internal conflict disperse through a region. In this paper, we assess the effect of spatiality and distance on the proliferation of civil conflict and the prospects fo...

The Long-Run Labor-Market Consequences of Civil War: Evidence from the Shining Path in Peru This study exploits district-level variation in the timing and intensity of civil war violence to investigate whether early-life exposure to civil wars affects labor-market outcomes later in life. In particular, we examine the impacts of armed conflict in Peru, a country that experienced the actions of a...
متن کاملCan Development Aid Contribute to Social Cohesion after Civil War? Evidence from a Field Experiment in Post-Conflict Liberia
Civil war is very common in the developing world, with harmful welfare effects when it occurs. Many fear that the devastation wrought by violent conflict destroys social capital, impedes economic development, and leads to the recurrence of violence (Paul Collier et al. 2003). In response, donors are injecting large amounts of aid into post-conflict countries. A significant share of this assista...

The paper relies on a neoclassical growth model to empirically test for the influences of a civil war on steady-state income per capita both at home and in neighboring countries. Moreover, this model provides the basis for measuring long-run and short-run effects of civil wars on income per-capita growth in the host country and its neighbors. Evidence of significant collateral damage on economi...
متن کاملHow Does Natural Resource Wealth Influence Civil War? Evidence from 13 Case Studies
Several large-N studies have found that a country’s natural resource dependence is correlated with either the likelihood it will suffer from civil war, or the duration of a civil war once it begins. What accounts for these natural resource-civil war correlations? The causal mechanisms behind the correlations are neither obvious, nor wellexplained by the large-N studies. It is important to ident...
